There is an ongoing debate between those translators who emphasize an “essentially literal” translation of the Bible and those who prefer “dynamic equivalence.” Some contrast “formal” an d “functional” equivalence.[1] Without attempting to enter this fray, it is astonishing that a significant number of New Testament texts have be mistranslated by both schools of thought, some ...... Textual Study 1: LUKE 16:16 (cf. Mt 11:12)
Is everyone forcing their way into the Kingdom?
Current Problematic Rendering:
“16 The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John; since that time the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it” (NIV).
Suggested Improved Rendering:
“ The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John; since that time the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached. All kinds of people are inflicting violence against it.”
Textual Study 2: LUKE 17: 20 - 25
Is the Kingdom visible or invisible?
Current Problematic Rendering:
Once, having been asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, "The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, 21nor will people say, 'Here it is,' or 'There it is,' because the kingdom of God is within you."
Then he said to his disciples, "The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it. Men will tell you, 'There he is!' or 'Here he is!' Do not go running off after them. For the Son of Man in his day will be like the lightning, which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other. 25But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.
Suggested Improved Rendering:
"Recognizing the coming of the kingdom does not need an investigation. Nor will people say, "Look over here, or look over there!" Pay attention! The kingdom of God is in your midst!"
Then He said to his disciples, "After you have anxiously longed to see My return, and people say that you should run here or thereto investigate, don't do so, since My return will be as obvious as a flash of lightening in the sky."
Textual Study 3: LUKE 20: 35, 36 (Also Mark 12:25)
Are all resurrected together?
Current Problematic Rendering:
35 But those who are considered worthy of taking part in that age and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, 36 and they can no longer die; for they are like angels. They are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection.
Suggested Improved Rendering:
But those who are considered worthy of taking part in that age and in the resurrection out from the dead ones will neither marry nor be given in marriage, 36 and they can no longer die; for they are like angels. They are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection.
Textual Study 4: LUKE 21: 32 (Context Vs. 25 -33)
Christ’s return in one generation?
Current Problematic Rendering:
At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift your heads, because you redemption is drawing near. . . Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near. I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away” (Lk. 21:27-8, 31-3, NIV).
Suggested Improved Rendering:
At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift your heads, because you redemption is drawing near. . . Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near. I tell you the truth, this nation (Israel) will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away” (Lk. 21:27-8, 31-3)
